School kit distribution for villages in Athani, Chikkodi, Kagawad, Mundagod and Jamakhandi talukas of Flood affected areas

30th September 2019 Caring for the needy around us

Most Parts of North Karnataka are devastated by heavy rains and flood caused by Krishna, Ghataprabha, Malaprabha and Kali and many tertiary rivers. Talukas like Athani, Kagawad, Chikodi, Gokak, Saundatti and Ramdurg in Belagavi district, Navalagund in Dharwad district, Mundagod in Uttara Kannada district and Jamakandi, Mudhol in Bagalkot district were badly affected during July/August 2019. We have discussed and wanted to help the affected people in the possible 3 ways.

We from UKSL Trust, Bangalore distributed relief material in phase 1 (500 Tarpaulins, 1000 printed light weight blankets, 500 Sarees, 500 Towels and 200 mats) in badly affected areas of Gokak Taluk in Belagavi district. Trust President Mr. Gangadhar Wali, life members Mr. Lingaraj Managuli, Mr. Dheerendra Bilagi, Mr. Praveen Hebbalkar, Mr. Mahantesh Veerapur and wellwishers were part of this distribution activity.

As part of UKSL Relief Work-phase 2, some clothes, household articles and groceries were collected and handed over to us by Unisys (IT Company) Bengaluru. Thanks to UKSL well-wisher Mr. Mahantesh Karadigudda. Some of UKSL members also handed over materials. UKSL Life member Mr. Lingaraj Managuli managed the collection of these materials from 4 different offices of Unisys and storing them in the common place at Bangalore i.e UKSL Vice President Mrs. Veena’s house. Trust President Mr. Gangadhar Wali along with Mrs. Veena Karthik, Mr. Karthik Hiremath, Mr. Girish Metgudmath and Mr. Prakash Rajagoli segregated all the material and repacked them in 40 carton boxes!! This whole work took almost one full day effort from them. Neatly organized and identified boxes were sent to Hubballi through VRL and materials were distributed in Nekarnagar area of Hubballi. Mr. Subhassingh Jamadar ensured proper distribution of these material with Yuva Brigade team.

As part of UKSL Relief Work-phase 3, our trust planned to distribute school bags, notebooks, compass box, crayons, pens, pencils, erasers and sharpeners to government school students of badly affected talukas in North Karnataka. The reason for distributing the items related to school students was based on the print and electronic media reports and ground report shared by organisations like Yuva Brigade. This idea was well received by well-wishers of UKSL trust and contributions poured in like anything. UKSL Trustees Mr. Prabhu Savanur and Mr. Kumar Handur along with trust President Mr. Gangadhar Wali organized custom-built durable school bags (back pack) in Chikpet Bengaluru. Mr. Prakash Seth has helped us in identifying right vendor and negotiations. 1500 school bags were made ready by M/s. Balaji Enterprises & transported to Hubballi through VRL. We thank Mr. Shashidhar from VRL office for coordinating the transport activities. Mr. Prabhu Savanur coordinated and negotiated with M/s. Rajguru Pen Mart, Hubballi for notebooks and stationary materials. UKSL take this opportunity to thank Mr. Kantilal of Rajguru Pen Mart who provided us the material at a very competitive price!! Herculean task of packing all these materials in the school bags and bundling them in 30, 40, 60 and 100s lot was neatly and successfully completed by Mr. M C Kori and Mr. Basavaraj Yadwad with the help of 15 odd friends!! Hats off to their efforts.

Trust treasurer Mr. Prakash Rajagoli, trustees Mr. Prabhu Savanur, Mr. Kumar Handur and life member Mr. Devaraj Barkol began their journey from Bangalore on the wee hours on 29.09.2019. After reaching Hubballi team has decided to head towards Chikkodi and stay there so that distribution of the relief material will be smoother in the affected areas. Mr. Kori, Mr. Basavaraj Yadwad and team ensured that all the material got loaded properly in a hired goods vehicle and ensured in reaches Chikkodi. Mr. Kori negotiated and organized the goods vehicle. Thanks to Mr. Phaniraj of Yarebailu Kannada medium school in Mundagod taluk of Uttara Kannada district for collecting 30 school bag kits from us @ Hubballi. Thanks to Mrs. Vasundhara Hosakeri teacher (sister of UKSL life member Mr. Veerendra Sukali) for informing us about the need of this remote village.

Four of us reached Chikkodi and stayed there in the night as per the plan. We began our journey of relief material distribution on 30th September morning. Our first school on the journey was Kannada primary school @ Manjari in Chikkodi Taluk. The school children and teachers welcomed us with the roses! The head master and the school staff helped us in distributing the school bag kits. Totally 220 such kits were distributed in this school. We were offered tea and biscuit as part of their hospitality. Thanks to Mr. Shiraguppe, school teacher in Manjari School, who accompanied us to the next 3 schools and provided guidance how to reach all our next schools by road without any problems. 40 school bag kits were distributed @ Shahapur Kannada and Marathi primary schools. They praised our efforts with loud applause. Our next destination was Kannada boys’ and girls’ primary schools @ Jugool in Kagawad Taluk. It’s border village between Karnataka and Maharashtra. We distributed 111 school bag kits in these schools. School teachers were full of praise for this noble activity by UKSL trust. We were offered tea and biscuits. Students were upbeat with their bags and other materials. We headed to Kannada primary school @ Ingali village in Chikkodi taluk. Hats off to their hospitality. They offered us “Madhyahnada bisi-oota” which was true to the name!! After handing over 180 School Bag kits in this school we took part in an interactive session with the school kids. It brought back the wonderful memories of primary school days! Some were so impressed by our work that they started greeting us (good morning sir, namaste sir), hugging us and even by touching our feet!!

Two school teachers escorted us on two-wheeler and showed the way to the next school!! We headed towards Kannada primary school @ Hulagabali in Athani Taluka by that time Mr. Shantinath of Yuva Brigade and Mrs. Bharati of Vimochana Sangha – Athani were waiting for us. We handed over 80 sets to distribute to the especially abled children spread across 20 schools. Since few of such students were in Hulagabali School Mrs. Bharati insisted us to distribute to them. We handed over 214 kits to Hulagabali School and Mr. Shantinath of Yuva Brigade and team distributed them to Kannada primary schools in Hulagabali and Karlatti. When we started our journey to Nadi Ingalaganvi it rained heavily for half an hour. Mr. Shantinath (got drenched in rain) and his brother Mr. Anil accompanied us to Government High school @ Nadi Ingalaganvi. This village is the birth place of Athani Shri Murugendra Shivayogi Swamiji of Gachchinamatha. By the time we reached that school it was around 5pm and ground in front of the school was completely wet with rain. We handed over 326 school kits. The head master of the school ensured distribution of these bags on the auspicious occasion of Gandhi and Shastri Jayanti!! By the time we reached last school for school bag distribution @ Tamadaddi village belonging to Jamakandi Taluk in Bagalkot district it was 7.30 pm!! Sincere thanks to the school head master and the school governing body members for waiting patiently. By handing over 315 sets and emptying the goods vehicle we started our return journey to Bengaluru. Completing the marathon distribution activity of two days in ONE day we all reached namma Bengaluru on 1st October morning and rushed to our respective offices!! Though it was quite a hectic journey but was worth spending our time and energy in helping the needy. Thanks to Mr. M C Kori who has helped in organizing goods vehicle to transport the material.

Thanks to Mr. Subhassingh Jamadar of Hubballi, Mrs. Nagaratna Sunil Ramagouda of Ashraya foundation Belagavi (, Mr. Vardhaman, Mr. Ganesh Patil and other team members of Yuva BrigadeAthani (for identifying badly affected schools) and Mrs. Bharati of Vimochana Sangha, Athani (for identifying the needy “specially abled” students, whose parents have lost their house, land and other valuables during the floods). True to UKSL spirit “Giving is not about just donating… It is about making a Difference” we executed the task. We felt satisfied by distributing the materials to the needy ones in whatever small way we could do. Thanks to our friend Mr. Subhassingh Jamadar who coordinated and planned our distribution activities and supporting even during execution. Without his help we wouldn’t have executed so smoothly. Thanks to drivers Mr. Jagadish and Mr. Prakash who helped us in material distribution. Thanks to all the donors for your generosity. Jagadish was so impressed by our work that he went on Facebook live for few minutes!! On behalf of UKSL trust we sincerely thank all the contributors who generously donated funds to this noble cause. In total we have collected around Rs. 8 lakhs and spend around Rs. 6.2 lakhs. Plans are there to use balance amount to identify and distribute needy items to some more schools in coming days.
