UKSL Trust’s support for rare art forms like Nandikolu Kunita:

India is a country rich legacy in culture and art. We can see different types of folk art and dance formats in North Karnataka. To name a few, Dollu kunita, Yakshagana, Kamsale Kunita, Nandikolu Kunita etc.

We at UKSL trust, are constantly and sincerely trying to encourage such rare art forms and the folk artists always.Every year we are supporting and bringing one team of folk dance to our UKSL ANNUAL DAY that gets organized in the month of January.

This year, we had invited a team of 6 members of Nandi Kolu Kunita Artists from Chapperdahalli village of Kottur Taluk in Bellary District to perform on this day.

Kunita means a ritual dance. Nandikolu Kunita is originally a religious dance farm it is combination of devotion, heraisns & skill. It is performed in many parts of the Karnataka by Veerashyvas. It can be seen at the Mysore Palace also during inaugural function of Navarathri Celebrations

Nandikolu is very steady bamboo stick with a diameter of about 4 inch and height about 10 to 15 feet. There is small pedestal made of wood to hold the Kolu, small statue of nandi on top of the stick with metal rings are attached to the bamboo that makes noise when the artists dance along with the stick in their hands.

Few small holes are made on the bamboo stick and rope passed through the holes. These ropes are tied around the shoulders of the artists to balance the weight of the stick.

With help of this ropes artists perform beautifully and demonstrate various dance steps which are not that easy for an ordinary person.

It requires lot of energy and strength to just lift this 15 Feet tall Nadikolu and dance requires even more strength & skill.

All UKSL org members joined hands in making the planting the saplings event successful. After the Nandi Kolu performance got over, swimming pool and rain dance areas were waiting for us to get drenched and enjoy in water!!

After people had great time in games, Nandi Kolu Kunita, Swimming and Rain dance, it was time for us to move to delicious lunch and get ready for the cultural events. The disciplined solders of UKS Trust, Mr. Prabhu Savanur, Mr. Dilip Huddar and Mr. Prakash Turmari managed the entire lunch session well.

Shankar Bidari inaugurated our cultural activities by lighting the lamp. We began the program with Indian National Anthem and ended with Karnataka state anthem.
